that 70's show

tom ford's spring collection 2011

last week carly and i headed to the city for a hair cutting and styling class that was put on by unite hair products, which happens to be one of the product lines we carry at salon non-fiction.  (www.uniteeurotherapy.com/) i personally love going to hair cutting classes, i love to learn new techniques and get inspired to take my creativity to a new level. this particular class was unique because not only did they show us the haircut "collections" they also showed us WHERE they got the inspiration from. i have never seen that before at a class, and i loved it! i get inspired while looking through magazines to try new ways of dressing or doing makeup but this class took the inspiration of 1974 VSL (yves saint laurent) and transformed it to a style and haircut that gave a nod to the 70's but also modernized it. the picture above of tom ford's spring collection totally captures the feel of the 70's but in a new fresh way. the look on the models at the class was one of lots of layers in the back with a bottom heavy fringed look in the front. so lots of fullness near the face and tons of movement in the back. also the dreaded middle part...now i am i girl who loves a side bang, but this class did inspire me to at least TRY a center part, which i found to be slightly amazing if you follow these rules:
1. don't let the top lay flat on your head, whether you have a large or small head, it doesn't do you any favors and can quickly become hippie/ peabody hair.
2. if you have a round or heart shaped face take the center part over a smidge, it helps balance out your features and makes the look not so severe.*
3. make sure you have plenty of volume (or texture) in your hair (i tend to wear it curly if i do a center part) middle part + flat hair = kurt cobain.
4. do not wear 70's inspired clothing with 70's looking hair, you just end up looking like you are going to a costume party.
5. have fun! the thing about hair is you can change your look so drastically with just changing something as little as a part, and hey, if you hate it, you can change it again the next day! here are some inspirational pictures for you and one of my attempt at farrah's famous feather.
*if you are uncertain of your face shape look at yourself in a mirror and take a lip pencil and draw the outline of your face, the shape it most looks like is your face shape (oval, square, heart, round)
